Digital
Textbook Option!
Students can save up to 45% by choosing eBook versions.
The Cornell Store began offering digital textbooks in fall 2006
as a third choice for students. This is still an emerging format
so there are a limited number of books publishers have converted
to digital form. At the Cornell Store the option is presented at
the shelves in the store next to new and used copies of the books.
This is part of the store's effort to help students save money
on textbooks. If an eBook is available, it is also indicated on
the online booklist for the course. The savings offered by the
eBook format vary by title, but can be up to 45% less than the
price of a new copy of the book.
All of the eBooks are in the Adobe eBook format, readable using
the standard free Adobe Acrobat Reader. To get an eBook, students
in these classes can find the appropriate eBook product card shelved
next to the new and used books. When they pay at the register,
a special receipt will print out that provides the unique codes
needed to download the eBook.
After students download the eBook content, they can read the book
from their computers without having to be connected to the web.
Some publishers allow printing of the pages, but others limit the
number of pages that can be printed. There are several advantages
in addition to the lower price: can carry the book with no extra
weight if you use a notebook computer; ability to annotate, search,
and even have the computer read out loud!
