Motherhood, The Elephant in the Laboratory
Panels and Discussions
Friday May 9th 12-5pm
Lower level of The Cornell Store

Featuring Book Contributors & Cornell Faculty

Join us for this important partial-day event based on the new book from Cornell University Press, edited by Emily Monosson, '88 - Motherhood, The Elephant in the Laboratory: Women Scientists Speak Out. This volume features nearly three dozen contributions and spans almost four decades in chronicling the difficulties in balancing family responsibility, motherhood and a career in academia in the particular context of the sciences. These issues must be discussed openly in a university of Cornell's stature, particularly one making such great strides in scientific research.

Session I will feature Joan Baizer, of the University of Buffalo, discussing her chapter "Extreme Motherhood: You Can't Get There From Here," which recounts her experiences from the 1970's forward. Discussion of and response to the essay will be led Cornell faculty discussants Shelley Correll, Sociology, and Melissa Thomas-Hunt, Johnson School of Management. both of whom are active in relevant contemporary research. Panel II will feature Gina Wesley-Hunt, of Montgomery College, whose "Standing Up" discusses her very recent battles as a post-doc in a prominent institution. Cornell faculty discussants will include Margaret Frey of Fiber Science and Apparel Design; Lisa Fortier of Clinical Sciences; and Barbara Knuth of Natural Resources. Under the supervision of moderator Emily Monosson, there will be a final, open
discussion period.

Please join us for this inquiry into these very important, but often hidden, issues in the contemporary academic setting. Introduction & Panel I will run from noon until 2pm and Panel II & Open Discussion from 2:30 until 5pm.

Co-Sponsored by The Cornell Store, The CU-ADVANCE Center, and Cornell University Press.

BLACK GREEK-LETTER ORGANIZATIONS IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY:
OUR FIGHT HAS JUST BEGUN.

May 23rd 2008 12-1:30 Lower Level

Featuring Gregory Parks, graduating Cornell JD, editor of the new collection as well as African American Fraternities and Sororities: The Legacy and the Vision; Vernon Mitchell, Cornell PhD student in History and contributor; Shanette Porter, Cornell PhD student in Psychology; and CURW Director Rev. Kenneth Clarke.

This event considers the history, unique culture and contemporary issues facing Black Greek-Letter Organizations, including Cornell-founded Alpha Kappa Alpha, which celebrated its centennial in 2006.  Looking beyond stereotypes to issues of philanthropy and the status of BLGOs in the African American community, the participants will discuss the timeliness of their research and the timelessness of the issues these organizations face.
