The Literary Event of the Year: The Original of Laura by Vladimir Nabokov
Thursday, November 19, 2009
Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium at 4:30 pm

Wendy Gellman Rosenthal Lecture with
Professor Brian Boyd, a leading Nabokov scholar and biographer, who hails from the University of Auckland in New Zealand
Special Cornell release date: November 16th, 2009
The author wanted it destroyed, but his wife could not do it. His only surviving heir could not be persuaded to publish it. So it remained hidden away for more than three decades. Now, 32 years after the death of Vladimir Nabokov, author of the modern classics Lolita and Pale Fire and one of the legends of Cornell’s faculty, The Original of Laura will finally be published. Dmitri Nabokov raced against illness to finish the translation, and the only manuscript copy has been kept under close guard in Random House headquarters. In honor of Nabokov’s famed residence at Cornell, the publisher is allowing the Cornell Store to release the book one day early to the Cornell community.
As Ron Rosenbaum told Slate: “Nabokov’s mind is more worthy of wonder than any that has expressed itself in print in the four centuries since the birth of Shakespeare…I regard Nabokov’s work, Nabokov’s mind, as a labyrinth one could (and ideally should) get lost in for a lifetime.” Rosenbaum goes on: “Encrypted within his words, encoded indecipherably, ambiguously, is the equivalent of the secret of lightning. Something akin to the secret code of higher human consciousness, the DNA, the genome of genius.”
Brian Boyd, the preeminent Nabokov scholar, will speak on The Original of Laura at the English Department on the 19th. This gives the Cornell community one final opportunity to celebrate the genius of Nabokov, who struggled to finish the manuscript before his death and demanded that his wife Vera burn it if unfinished. It was she who saved Lolita from a similar fate.
Cornell Store staff will be present with copies of both the Nabokov and the Boyd books for sale.

Discussion & Book Signing with David Robinson

Empire's Twilight: Northeast Asia under the Mongols
The rise of the Mongol empire transformed world history, and its collapse in the mid-fourteenth century had equally profound consequences. Four themes dominate Empire's Twilight study of the late Mongol empire in Northeast Asia during this chaotic era: the need for a regional perspective encompassing all states and ethnic groups in the area; the process and consequences of pan-Asian integration under the Mongols; the tendency for individual and family interests to trump those of dynasty, country, or linguistic affiliation; and finally, the need to see Koryo Korea as part of the wider Mongol empire.
Author: David M. Robinson is Associate Professor of History and Asian Studies at Colgate University and author of Bandits, Eunuchs, and the Son of Heaven: Rebellion and the Economy of Violence in Mid-Ming China (U. Hawaii Press) and editor of Culture, Courtiers, and Competition: The Ming Court, 1368-1644 (Harvard U. Press).
